How to succeed at Competency Based Interviews
STRUCTURE
You will read about STAR, SAR, OAR, and even CARL. These are all just fancy ways of saying – a start, a middle, and an end. Typically, you will have a short intro and end, with most of your talking within the middle section of your example. Many job seekers overtalk the start and end, be careful about this!!
I not WE
Many job seekers fail because of this. Simple, you must use “I”
PREPARE TWO EXAMPLES
It is important to prepare two examples for each competency. You will have the one you used on the form, and you will also need a back-up. There is no worse feeling than the pressure of having to find an example during the actual interview
HOW not WHAT
You MUST remain focused during interview. It’s critical that you demonstrate “HOW”. Your example isn’t the really that important, it’s your ability to demonstrate the how you performed the competency within the example. That said, try to pick recent and relevant examples!
